The Benefits of Fish Oil
By: Ian Ruffner
Fish oil has become a very popular supplement as of late. The more people learn about the health and overall well being of using this product the more notoriety it gets and for good reason!
FATS
Fish oil contains what are called “essential” fatty acids which our body need to function properly. The two main most beneficial ones are called EPA and DHA.
Now unfortunately our bodies do not produce these substances naturally. So how do we get them, you might ask? Well, the best way to get them is through eating food rich in Omega 3’s or through supplementation.
However, for most meatheads like myself eating fish rich in omega 3’s like wild salmon gets rather boring fast so supplementing with fish oil every day is the way to go. Not to mention it is one of the best sources you can obtain.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS
There are multiple health benefits to supplementing with fish oil. Not only is it great for overall health but the list goes on… improving inflammation, heart health, joint health and it even supports the function of insulin.
Fish oil has also been shown to support overall body composition for guys who are looking to build muscle. So believe it or not there are good fats out there like these that well help you reach your muscle building goals!
SUPPLMENTING WITH FISH OIL
As a rule of thumb I would go with anywhere from 2-3 grams of EPA and DHA a day to get the full benefit of using it. (Editor’s Note: a 1000mg Fish Oil cap normally does not equate to 1g of EPA and DHA) Fish oil is also relatively inexpensive. It is in my top arsenal of supplements along with a good whey protein powder and a multivitamin. Be sure that the brand you buy is well recommended and will not cause fish burps, trust me you will think me later!
As always, talk with your physician before starting any new supplement regiment.
